Just finished 30 illustrations for a parenting guide book coming out soon.

They had to be Greyscale with 1 spot color.
Instead of the usual cut-outs or collages that I love making I made them digitally. But I have to say that using a Wacom tab + Photoshop is the nicest way to work digitally because it still feels like you're hand drawing the images and it allows you to have different thickness in the same brush line.

My intention in this work was to explore the fleeting in the skin: the marks that seem to last forever but only do so when we hold on to them. They are the memories, and although they don't last forever and are distorted most of the times, in our head they seem everlasting - for a certain period of time.

Been doing some animations (working for the first time with After Effects woohoo) for a Children's Play that will be showing tomorrow in Odivelas, Portugal.

I'm trying to figure out a way to post the animations in which they still make sense since there is no sound to the animation - their purpose is to accompany a live narrator who tells the story. (the narrator is hidden behind the curtains and tells the story while there are 2 actors on stage, a grandma and granddaughter, and the animation takes up the main stage space illustrating the story as if it is being told to the granddaughter by grandma and she is visualizing it).

I have no anwers to this. And I also love flowers.

But flowers are ambiguous. They are both male and female.
I like ambiguous people too.

Man, Woman, does it matter? Does a man need to look manly to be attractive? Does a woman need to look feminine to be beautiful?

Light Painting @ Sasha beach club, for EDP

I've taken ages to update my blog, but here are some Light Painting outcomes I did with another illustrator at Sasha for a brand activation event.

It was a Live event that lasted through out the club's opening hours (at night) and in which people would come into the tent where we had set up the camera, stand still for a few seconds while we'd do the drawings with a flashlight and then get a printed postcard that looked exactly like this:

Words cannot express how proud I am that - finally - someone in charge did the right thing. Too bad it wasn't Lisbon the first (hehe) but I hope we will get there one day.

The mayor of the city decided to close down the Bullfighting Arena and build a Science Museum instead - who would have though ey? Real culture instead of barbarism! - and now he officially said that Viana do Castelo is an anti-bullfighting city.

When you spend a lot of time working on set briefs with little challenges and premeditated outcomes you forget how creative you can be.
It's kind of nice not knowing what your final outcome will be. Or what materials you are going to use.

So I'm working on a new project (project 3 - but 1 and 2 are still in progress) - and these are some images I did for the theme - rough ideas I had for it today - yet it might not take this direction...

I'm also really excited because in 2 days I'll be returning to Portugal for Xmas - yey!

Final Week of Drawing Classes at Ar.Co

After 3 months of drawing classes I've come to the last week.
There were way too many portuguese bank holidays in-between but I feel like I've learned a lot from these months - The only material I had ever worked with before doing this was China Ink, and when I was still in primary school..... So this was a great change from computer programmes and cut-outs (which I still love!).
Now I want to incorporate these in future cut-outs somehow. And I need to keep practicing on my sketch-diary - I found I love drawing random people's faces so I need to keep doing that this summer.

Finished the English version last week and am now doing the Portuguese one.
They have the same information but will have a different overal look - because it's for different people and opinions differ...
The English version was for MATP and the English for the Centro Vegetariano.

Children's Book Illustrations

I had 2 days to come up with 11 illustrations for a (already written) kid's story. It felt just like one of uni's 30-hours projects (or "project runway" for illustrators haha) - I loved it!
Here's 2 sketches.

I think this whole taking-drawing-classes is really infiltrating my work. It's kind of ironic how I started illustrating because I was taught Photoshop while doing Graphic Design and started working on some digital photographs turning them into digital illustrations - and then from uni on I started using hand-made things and then converting them into digital, or mixing both - and now I'm using a lot of inks and all that "retro" stuff (did I just call drawing and painting retro? haha)....
So, at the moment I'm working with a chaotic mix of materials and devices! and I'm really enjoying doing everything backwards.

The Story is called D. Ana e a Andorinha, written by Paula Nunes.

Flyer for the Animal Health Trust's Strangles Appeal ("Breaking the Strangles Hold", as it's called).
They already had a visual line I had to follow and I confess I did try to push my own way through but in the end of the day, they went with the familiar visuals. It wasn't something I was thrilled about, but having finished it, and having been able to do both the sort of visual they were after and something that would please my sensitive eyes as well, I'm now happy with it.

There are simple things one would never think of if it wasn't for creative teachers or interesting classmates.
Today at Ar.Co in the drawing class given by João Catarino we did a couple of mirrored portraits with silhouette blots in permanent ink and by using bleach on a calligraphy nib to define the details.

I did this doodle of Miguel - I'd call it a drawing but I'm still touching base with non-digital non-cut-out illustration methods.

Miguel did this one of me - he has Autism and he does the most amazing texture/line filling details in his drawings.

The Conjoined teens' book

Last year I was given a brief entitled The Anatomy of Reading. It asked me to defy the way a book is read or constructed.

At about the same time I saw a documentary on Channel 4 about two amazing conjoined twins, Abigail and Brittany Hensel .

They share the same body but have very different personalities and tastes. They might be attached to each other but they value their individuality! So.. I made a book they both could read!

The same book. The same pages. The same text and illustrations. Each side belongs to a girl and was made specially for her (e.g. the left side suits Britt as she has a slight head angle)

The book has 21marked pages and 6 illustrations.

The text is Oscar Wilde's poems and short-story (1.Madonna Mia // 2.The Sphinx // 3.The Selfish Giant // 4.The Dole of the King's Daughter // 5.Requiescat)

This week I reprinted the book, bound it, re-did the cover, trimmed and photographed it. There were some minor mistakes that needed to be corrected - and the new cover is simple as the old one had too much noise. I also re-did the Madonna Mia illustration.

Both groups have their own letterhead/logo type of thing but they wanted a figure to add to the competition clothes (and it had to include the school's cross).
The uniforms are orange (t-shirts and sweaters) and dark blue (trousers) so it's gonna be printed in the opposite colour on each.

DIARY 2008 (GDA Agenda 2008)

I have finally finished the 2008 DIARY for GDA (www.gdaie.pt) an artist's rights association.
Due to bureaucratic reasons they took longer to send em the final texts - this was supposed to be done by December, before Xmas.... But I still have free time so at least it's something that kept me busy.
The good part of having finished is I can now move on to entering some competitions - and doing the work for the same - as well as having a fuller pocket ^_^ hehe

Cover apart, the whole diary has only 2 colours (to lower printing costs), it's A5 and the main purpose for them to do this DIary was to allow cooperators to have important phone numbers that had to do with the social part of GDA (doctors with special prices for artists and such) and since it's a diary, they can keep it with them everyday and use the numbers only when needed.

I took the first line of The Cure's song Disintegration (from the album Disintegration) and built a love story that ended with a crime of passion.

On the night before my birthday I bought a train ticket to Braga. This year, I decided, I wanna go travelling in the north of Portugal. I could spend a lifetime traveling and exploring other cities in the world but when it comes to my home country I haven't been out of Lisbon for many years now.
So, I packed a small backpack, called up youth hostels and on the morning of my bday got on that train.
The whole idea, besides the attempt at being less of an internet zombie and actually learn something more about our history, was to gather some weird postcards that they have in these cities, sketch a lot and take some nice mobile-phone pics. The sketches I need to scan, but here are some images:

MONDAY - Lisboa//Braga

(where a full meal is 3€50)

I have never seen so many churches, chapels, etc in one area - Braga is gorgeous and is kitsch-heaven for those that like me get obsessed with catholic imagery (even though I'm not really religious)
Everybody was really nice, random old ladies would say 'good morning' to me on the streets - but it's also a city where people suffer.. seriously, being a catholic is painful when you live by it and for it - all day inside these churches old ladies would be praying from very early with their crucifix, kneeling or sitting in one place for some minutes, mumbling, then onto the next section of the church, to the next saints, more mumbling, in a repetitive cycle that probably only stopped by lunch time - religion is for masochistic beings.
Non the less, in this one church there were at least 5 different Jesus-es. Even a Gay one (haha)

Grammar error apart, i love this paste-up.

Portuguese phenomenon: the Mirone (plural Mirones) person or group of people with nothing better to do than to watch other people. Most commonly found around car accidents or looking through the window. In this case, a group of Mirones watches the road works.... obviously, a very interesting event...

(A turma das Bóinas) My granpa always wore these hats. I'm sure they're not a portuguese invention but they are definitely a typical granpa thing. It's a shame you don't see that many people wearing it anymore in Lisbon, but in smaller towns EVERYONE has one *it's so cute!*

THURSDAY - Viana do Castelo//Porto

Second capital of Portugal. Where the drink with the same name comes from - or at least the name - I didn't go sight seeing or stay in a youth hostel here, but I did go to an animation festival (by coincidence all the animated movies they showed were british!), to a friend's theatre play and another friend's Opera rehearsals. Found these on the walls.

Patrick Wolf's The Childcatcher

I'm not trying to go on a gay-men-with-songs-about-child-molestation songs theme here, it happened. I love the way this is sang - he does both mother and childcatcher's voices in the narrative and the distorted beats get me every time.

*01 Grey Gardens - Rufus Wainwright

I've started some music illustrations for "songs I like" - to 'like' a song is vague i know, but i didn't want to call it songs-with-an-interesting-sound-which-have-great-lyrics-and-fit- -my-illustrative-slash-narrative-preference ... i'm sure i'll come up with a better name by the end of it (any suggestions btw??)

The first obvious choice (for me) is Rufus Wainwright. His songs are so different from each other and that made it so hard to chose ONE to illustrate, also, many of his lyrics are amazing narratives and have great symbolic elements that would make for great complex images - but I guess because he is also so descriptive in many songs, the elements are TOO MANY for only one, simple, black and white essence-catcher of an image.
Although it's not on my top 5 Rufus' songs (maybe on the top 10) Grey Gardens seemed like a powerful choice. 'Simple', soft song with a lot of good symbolic references - specially after finding out what it really was about: When he was only a teen, visiting London, Rufus went to a bar and pulled (or got pulled by) an older guy that 'invited' him to a night stroll in the park and then raped him. In the lyrics "Tadzio, over you", Tadzio being the young boy of Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and in the song's title, Grey Gardens like the 1976 Documentary (after watching this i was so glad i left home so young!) there's such a big feeling of wanting to get over the past and even if not all is forgotten, just turning the page (even if sometimes by force).
